This policy is short, because there is not much to tell. Our website sets no cookies at all unless you choose to accept them, and almost everything on it is served from our own server. The one exception is the Google Analytics script, described at the end. We do not sell your data and we never will.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Some are needed to make a site work. Most are used to recognise you again later, either to remember a preference or to measure what you did. Related technologies such as local storage do a similar job, and we treat them the same way in this policy.
What we set before you choose
Nothing. Until you make a choice in the cookie notice, this website sets no cookies and stores no identifier on your device. Analytics is switched off by default rather than on.
The one exception is a browser capability check that WordPress runs to work out whether your device can display emoji. It is stored for the tab you are in and disappears when you close it. It records nothing about you.

If you decline, the Google Analytics cookies are never set. They are not set and then ignored, and there is no hidden copy of them.
Advertising
We do not currently run advertising, remarketing or social media tracking tags on this website. The marketing option in the cookie notice is there so that your choice is already recorded if that ever changes. If we do add anything of that kind, we will update this policy and it will only run if you have accepted it.
How we count visitors without cookies
We still want to know roughly how many real people use the site and which pages help them, including the people who decline analytics. So we count visits on our own server instead.
That record holds the page you were on, the address you arrived from, your browser’s user agent, and a one way scrambled version of your IP address. The scrambling cannot be reversed, so the record cannot be traced back to you, and it is only there to spot one machine hitting the site thousands of times. It sets nothing on your device, it does not follow you between websites, and it is not shared with anyone.
Third parties
Almost nothing on this site comes from anyone else. Every file we control, including the fonts and the images, is served from our own server. There are no embedded videos, no maps, no chat widgets, no social buttons and no content delivery network.
There is one exception. Your browser loads the Google Analytics script from googletagmanager.com on every page, before you have chosen anything, so Google sees that request and the address it came from either way. What your choice changes is what the script may then do. If you accept, Google sets the two cookies listed above and records your visit. If you decline, it sets no cookies and Google receives only basic cookieless signals. No other company sees your visit at all.
Changing your mind
You can change your choice whenever you like using the cookie settings button in the bottom left corner of any page. Your new choice replaces the old one straight away.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Every major browser lets you do this, and its help pages will show you how. Blocking cookies will not stop this website working, because we do not rely on them for anything.
